GENERAL INFORMATION
The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department is recruiting to establish an eligible list for Reserve Deputy Sheriff. Incumbents will perform routine law enforcement and crime prevention duties, serve as deputy coroner, and perform other related duties. Eligible lists are usually valid for six months and may be extended for up to one year.
This position is part of the Unclassified Service of the county and as such the incumbent shall be considered an "at will" employee.
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Reserves are volunteers who assist the Sheriff’s Department on a regular basis, especially during periods of emergency or unusual activity. The primary reward for Reserves is many hours of hard work and the satisfaction derived from public service.
Incumbents are requested to work a minimum of 16 volunteer hours for the Sheriff’s Department each month or 48 hours each quarter.
TYPICAL TASKS – LEVEL III
Assigned to the Men’s Jail, Public Safety Center or the Honor Farm.
Other special Assignments
Will not allow riding in a patrol vehicle or work in the area of general law enforcement.
TYPICAL TASKS – LEVEL II
May do all duties allowed as a Level III.
May ride in a patrol vehicle with a regular Deputy Sheriff who has a Basic POST certificate.
May begin Field Training program in order to become Level I Reserve
TYPICAL TASK – LEVEL I
May do all duties allowed as a Level III and II.
Complete the Field Training Program.
After above training is completed can conduct general law enforcement duties, which include patrol duties, without direct supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to:
Read and understand policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement activities;
Supervise the daily activity of sentenced and unsentenced inmates;
Remember names, faces, details of incidents and places, and possess good powers of observation;
Think clearly, use good judgement, and adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action in emergency situations;
Write clear and comprehensive reports;
Secure information from witnesses and suspects;
Demonstrate physical endurance, agility and strength;
Understand written and oral instructions;
Work with and control sensitive, confidential information; and,
Enforce rules and regulations with fairness, tact and impartiality
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform essential job functions typical of the duties of Deputy Sheriff–Custodial or Deputy Sheriff-Coroner;
Ability to read or see objects under ambient, limited or artificial lighting, and at a reasonable distance with sufficient clarity to permit their recording or accurate description; i.e., persons, vehicles, license numbers, addresses, street signs, items of property, written messages, printed material, etc.;
Ability to hear normal speech and other audible events, even in combination with other environmental noise; i.e., gunshots, cries for help, glass breaking, alarm bells ringing, tires squealing, etc; and,
Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time; walk, run, jump, kneel, crouch, twist, stoop, squat, crawl and climb; carry the average weight of a person (approximately 165 pounds); take physical charge of a person who may resist arrest; work indoors and outdoors, including extreme heat and cold; tolerate extreme noise and vibrations; work in a confined working space; work with chemicals, explosive materials, and mechanical and electrical hazards.
Driver's License:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and remain free from repeated preventable accidents.
Age:
Not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment.
Citizenship Requirement:
Pursuant to Section 1031.5 of the Government Code, permanent resident aliens who desire to be employed as peace officers must have applied for citizenship papers at least one year prior to the date of application for this position.
Education:
Graduation from high school or passage of high school level General Education Development (GED) test; AND,
Must Possess Level III Module or higher Reserve Officer Certificate
Experience - Level III:
Must possess Level III Module Reserve Officer Certificate;
Must have 832 PC;
Must possess valid CPR and First Aid Certificates.
Experience - Level II:
In addition to Level III must possess Level II Module Reserve Office Certificate.
Experience - Level I:
Must, in addition to Level III and II, possess Level I Module Reserve Officer Certificate.
Complete Module D or obtain a POST Basic academy certificate AND;
Complete the Filed Training Program;
Complete 24 hours of POST certified training every two years.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of law enforcement and community regulations;
Criminal law with particular reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizures;
English/Spanish bilingual ability;
The rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Department;
The topography and geography of Stanislaus County, including locations and functions of social service agencies;
Civil law, codes and ordinances, with particular reference to the administrative functions of the Sheriff's Department, including those pertaining to Coroner;
The purpose and objectives of modern detention facility techniques;
Principles and techniques of supervising group activities in detention, secured setting facility;
Laws, statutes, court proceedings and regulations governing both sentenced and unsentenced inmates.
Weight proportionate to height.
Non-smoker.
